Too often companies hear about the latest and greatest tool (like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) which can potentially help drive Internet/Web-based traffic to their business and quickly rush to try them out.  Yet, many company leaders do not take the time to fully understand the complexities of each form of Social Media. So, they quickly set up accounts within sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and more, but do not know how to attract an audience and their efforts within Social Media fail. Further, due to limited staff resources and/or lack of knowledge regarding the time it takes to implement effective Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn campaigns, many company leaders cannot easily comprehend why their Social Media efforts do not immediately work.

One reason their Social Media efforts fail and companies are unable to attract attention is usually due to the fact that the CEO, CFO, Owner, President of a business may not understand who their Internet audience is. Another reason efforts fail is because the Social Media related tasks may be delegated (by the CEO, CFO, Owner, President of a business) to a person or group of people who are not familiar with efficiently creating, managing, tracking and analyzing marketing campaigns. Employees who lack Internet savvy and sufficient marketing knowledge will, most likely, end up wasting precious company time and resources while trying to attract a Social Media audience.

The most critical piece of information to understand about Social Media is that it can help you start conversations with a new audience. It is not a tool which, in most cases, will instantly generate sales for your company. Yet, if your business can attract an audience and begin conversations, it can lead to building relationships. Such relationships can eventually evolve into new business for your enterprise.

Your network consists of your connections, your connections’ connections, and the people they know, linking you to a vast number of qualified professionals and experts. Through your LinkedIn network you can:

  • Manage the information that’s publicly available about you as a professional
  • Find and be introduced to potential clients, service providers, and subject experts who come recommended
  • Create and collaborate on projects, gather data, share files and solve problems
  • Be found for business opportunities and find potential partners

How can Twitter help my business?

After joining Twitter (it is free to join), we suggest creating a profile within Twellow. Next, we instruct clients to search within Twellow to find professionals and/or individuals that may have an interest in the products and/or services your business provides to customers. Then, we ask that you follow those people within Twitter. As soon as you are following others within Twitter, it is a good idea to ask them to follow you too. The next step is to create Tweets (updates that you will submit) which contain targeted and valuable messages to those who actively read your Twitter posts. We suggest to our Twittering clients:

  • Use Twitter regularly, and consider assigning a specific person to tweet on a daily basis
  • Remember not to blast out press releases over and over again
  • Make sure that your Twitter voice reflects your company culture
  • Be authentic when you tweet so that your company’s personality — whatever it is — comes through effectively
  • Attract and retain customers by communicating with your followers daily and posting (you’re limited to a total of 140 characters) company updates

What is Facebook?

Facebook is a web-based application which enables people to share information with friends, co-workers, and entire social networks. Facebook allows many individuals in the world to effectively connect with one another (for free) and communicate more frequently.

Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.

How can Facebook help my business?

When you create your profile within Facebook, you can list the name of the company you work for, describe your enterprise, and provide a link to your company’s website(s). Not only does the link to your company website within the Facebook profile help Internet Search Engines, as more and more people connect with you as friends, relatives, and/or associates, these individuals can learn about your business.

Further, a Fan page can be created within Facebook for your business. Once the Fan page has been created, you can ask your friends, relatives and associates to become a fan of your business. As soon as they have become a Fan of your business, a link to your Fan page appears within each person’s profile. By connecting with many people and asking them to become Fans of your company, you’ll help create more awareness of your business.
